What Is an Elbow Fracture?

An elbow fracture is simply a broken bone in the elbow joint. However, because the elbow joint has three major bones, there are several different ways you can break your elbow.

Some common elbow fracture Dr. Joseph treats in the Vail Valley and Summit County include:

  • Olecranon Fracture: Usually the result of a blow to the elbow via a fall or collision with an object.

  • Forearm Fracture: Caused when the two bones of the forearm break.

  • Radial Neck Fracture: Typically caused by falling onto an outstretched hand.

  • Epicondylar Fracture: Known as an avulsion injury, these elbow fractures are typically seen in children.

No two elbow fractures are the same, and treatment will depend on the severity of the break.

A broken elbow requires immediate medical attention. Failing to treat an elbow fracture properly could result in permanent damage. Dr. Joseph treats broken elbows in three clinics:

Do Broken Elbows Need Surgery?

Certain types of elbow fractures do not require surgery to repair. These are known as simple elbow fractures and can often be conservatively treated with a splint.

Surgery for a broken elbow is required if any of the following take place:

  • A bone or pieces of a bone are misaligned

  • A fractured elbow bone has broken through the skin

  • An elbow bone has broken into several pieces

Dr. Joseph and his team will recommend a surgical treatment for your elbow fracture that heals the bone in its proper configuration.
